‘He is one of my very special poets … I have had him in my hands from my earliest youth and I read and re-read him continually’
Verdi on Shakespeare.
Composed when Verdi was at his most inventive and idealistic, having just met the woman who was to be his second wife, a love of Shakespeare shines through this magnificent opera. Combining high drama and patriotism, enshrined with the mysterious influences of the three witches and wrapped in stirring melodies, the title character defers to Lady Macbeth whose gradual disintegration under the
influence of conscience reveals one of the most powerful performances in
the opera.

“A contender for the most beautiful summer opera venue in the country just got more beautiful!”
