Musing how disappointed he was that Sondheim had not offered this new work to the New York Met Opera the former general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, Schuyler G Chapin, said “It is an opera, a modern American opera”. Richard Studer (Director and Designer) and Jonathan Lyness (Conductor) bring us a new production of Stephen Sondheim’s masterpiece Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street this July. Described by The Times as a ‘Virtuoso of the Arts’ Baritone Matthew Sharp leads the outstanding cast as the vengeful barber Sweeney Todd. A regular at ENO, ROH and Opera Holland Park, mezzo-soprano Clare Presland co-stars as Mrs Lovett, the shop proprietress with an (ahem!) unusual recipe for pies. Joining us for the first time is soprano Eleanor Sanderson-Nash as the charming young Johanna Barker. Tenor William Morgan who you will remember as Prunier in our production of La Rondine in 2021 returns as Johanna’s suitor Anthony Hope. We are delighted to welcome back two of our wonderful stars from our 2018 production of Candide, mezzo-soprano Felicity Buckland and tenor Robin Bailey playing the roles of Beggar Woman and Adolf Pirelli. A frequent artist at ROH, bass Simon Wilding returns to West Green as the lustful power-abuser Judge Turpin. Baritone Jonathan Cooke (La Rondine 2021) plays his greasy lackey, Beadle Bamford. This production with its stellar cast promises a thrilling evening’s entertainment. | |
